New look Sailors Arms ready for summer
Popular Newquay pub the Sailors Arms is open for business again after a £200,000 refurbishment that is set to make it the town’s top spot for drinking, dining and entertainment over the summer.
The pub’s new look is inspired by 1950s seaside resorts, with an added contemporary edge that sees distressed timbers mixed with more industrial furnishings. Inside, the pub is brighter and lighter thanks to new glass windows running the width of the building.
Other touches of seaside nostalgia include four flavours of gourmet popcorn and a hot dog cart on the pub’s panoramic deck overlooking Newquay Bay.
Inside, tables have been added to increase dining capacity and new futons and bean bags offer space for relaxing. The bar area has been redesigned, with a dedicated cocktail area and an extended range of wines and coffees. And for real ale lovers, Sailors now has its very own cask ale – Jolly Sailors, created by Truro brewer Skinners.
The menu at the Sailors Arms continues to offer a range of traditional pub dishes at affordable prices, with the addition of platters ideal for sharing, either as a light meal or as a snack with drinks. Food is served throughout the pub, including the deck area.
From next Monday, 13th May, the Sailors Arms will be opening earlier, offering farmhouse breakfasts from 8.00 am. All customers buying a coffee between 8.00 and midday will be offered complimentary toast.
General manager Dave Ruddick said, “We’re delighted to be reopening in good time for the busy summer season and look forward to welcoming regulars and new customers with our smart new design, great food and drink and the best atmosphere in Newquay.”
Dave and the Sailors Arms team have put together a packed programme of entertainment to make sure there’s never a dull moment for customers at the pub and the Sailors nightclub in the same building. The weekly line up, running throughout the summer, looks like this:
Wednesdays: The Big Quiz, with a £50 prize for the winner.
Thursdays: Jam sessions hosted by Danny B. Everyone welcome to sing!
Saturday: live music with musician Adam Parfitt. Fantastic party atmosphere from 8.00 pm Sunday: Super Sunday Cider Sessions, quiz and bingo

Sailors Arms open from 8.00 am – 1.00 am (alcohol sold between 11.00 and 1.00)

TCG pledges year-long support for Cancer Research UK
TCG has selected Cancer Research UK as its nominated charity for the next 12 months, setting a fundraising target of £70,000.
Along with co-ordinated fundraising activity across the business such as ‘bucket shakes’ on Bank Holidays and other high footfall dates, an Easter Egg Hunt and Beach Parties, each of TCG’s 75 sites will organise local events including barbecues, band nights and family fun days to support the charity.
Last year, TCG supported Help for Heroes, with its pubs and bars raising funds through a range of activities. Despite customers continuing to watch their expenditure, and poor weather on potential big fundraising days such as the Diamond Jubilee, the business managed to donate a total of £60,000 – ahead of its £50,000 target.
Chief operating officer Nigel Wright commented, “The fact that we managed to smash our fundraising goal last year speaks volumes for the enthusiasm and commitment of our pub and bar teams.
“We are confident they, and our operations and head office teams, will rise to the challenge again for Cancer Research UK, which is a charity that all our customers can relate to.”
Lucy Squance, corporate acquisition manager at Cancer Research UK, said, “We are delighted with the partnership with TCG and look forward to supporting them in their fundraising endeavours over the next year.”
Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. The charity receives no government funding for its life-saving research, so every step it makes towards beating cancer relies on every pound donated. www.cancerresearchuk.org

Battle of the Bands lifts sales at TCG
A Battle of the Bands contest has been music to the ears of managed operator TCG, generating sales uplifts of up to 100% at participating pubs and bars.
Seven venues across TCG’s south-west region took part in the contest, branded ‘Live and Unleashed’. Heats at each site started in September, featuring three or four popular local bands. Winners from each heat progressed to their regional semi-final and then a Grand Final in mid-November, held at the Sailors Arms in Newquay, where acts performed alongside ‘The Voice’ finalist Adam Isaac.
The pubs and bars hosting Live and Unleashed events included established music venues as well as sites staging live music for the first time, such as Bar 38 in Portsmouth and the Green House in Bristol, which both doubled sales on the night of their heat.
TCG chief operating office Nigel Wright said, “Live music is already a vital part of the sales mix in many of our pubs and bars. The idea behind Live and Unleashed was to give existing music venues something different to their usual offer and to trial live music in new sites
“On both counts, the contest was a great success. Each heat and semi-final drew in an audience of new and existing customers, generated incremental sales and created interest around the host venue. The pubs that staged their first live music night will be hosting acts regularly as a result, and all the pubs that took part are keen to so again.”
The Anchor in Bristol saw a 70% uplift in sales when it hosted a heat. General manager Steve Fingerhut said, “We stage live music regularly, but it’s generally cover bands whereas Live and Unleashed showcases original acts. The heat was a great night for us – the pre-promotion ensured a good turnout of new customers and many of our regular music crowd came in to see something different.
“It was a great way to refresh our music offer and reach new music fans and we’re looking at holding another ‘one off’ Battle of the Bands night in the pub soon.”
